OMSI ChemLab

Want to make things bubble, ooze, change colors, or glow in the dark?

Come and see OMSI's ground-breaking wet Chemistry lab. The lab is the first of its kind to offer a comprehensive program of wet chemistry activities to the museum public. Hands-on experiments and activities appeal to ages 3 to 93! Experience hands-on chemistry experiments, awesome demonstrations, displays, activities, and more. There's always something new to see and do--the Chem Lab staff changes the experiments on a weekly basis. To find out what will be available each week, read the OMSI ChemLab Calendar.

Actual dates or individual experiments may vary according to lab resources and recent changes to our exhibit offerings. For the latest information or answers to your questions on the curriculum, please call the OMSI Chemistry Lab office at 503.797.4670. To arrange a large group visit, please call OMSI Group Registration at 503.797.4661.

OMSI provides chemical safety goggles and instructions for each experiment, so the lab is appropriate for most ages with supervision.

By popular request, here's how to make Flubber!

Learn about OMSI's Experiencing Chemistry Museum Manual and Teacher Resource Guide for developing your own wet chemlab and "experiencing chemistry" in your own classroom or home.

High school students may apply for internship positions within the lab. Interns explore chemistry in greater depth through the preparation, presentation, and evaluation of experiments for the public.

The activities of the OMSI chemistry lab are directed by a Chemist in Residence.
